Horses and Hard Hats

Horses and Hard Hats

Note from the Nordegg, Alberta, Mining Museum:     Horses, used before motorized equipment came in, were provided with hard leather hats and did not work double shifts.  A coal miner, who might or might not wear a hard hat and could work double shifts (as necessary to feed his family?) was required to return his horse to the barn and get a rested one for his second shift.
