Parties and Patriots

Parties and Patriots

In this divisive election season, let’s not judge a person’s patriotism by the party he or she favors, nor the faith he or she holds, or does not hold.

Oh beautiful for spacious skies For amber waves of grain,

For purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain.

Oh beautiful for patriot dream That sees beyond the years

Thine alabaster cities gleam undimmed by human tears;

America, America, God shed His grace on thee

and crown thy good with brotherhood

from sea to shining sea.

  1. Well said! I was curious to find out if the inspiration for this song was anywhere near Nevada. According to Wiki (since I don’t have time for further research), America the Beautiful was written by Katherine Lee Bates in 1895. Travelling from Massachusetts to Colorado, “Several of the sights on her trip inspired her,… including the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, the “White City” with its promise of the future contained within its alabaster buildings; the wheat fields of America’s heartland Kansas, … and the majestic view of the Great Plains from high atop Zebulon’s Pikes Peak (Colorado).” Coincidentally another Pike (County) is mentioned in the previous entry. I believe it is in Pennsylvania.

Been Here? Done That? Tell Me About It!
